    After Babel

    Book by George Steiner

After Babel: Aspects of Language and Translation is a linguistics book by literary critic George Steiner, in which the author deals with the "Babel problem" of multiple languages. After Babel is a comprehensive study of the subject of language and translation. It is both a controversial and seminal work that covers a great deal of new ground and has remained the most thorough book on this topic since its publication. Director Peter Bush of the British Centre for Literary Translation at the University of East Anglia described the book as a "pioneering work which revealed all communication as a form of translation, and how central translation is to relations between cultures." Daniel Hahn at ContemporaryWriters.com wrote that "It is extraordinary in making a real contribution to translation studies, while remaining fairly self-contained and accessible to people who have never before given the matter a second thought." The Babel Project is my effort to write two books on the changes wrought by the phone-based life on human development (The Anxious Generation) and liberal democracy (Life After Babel). I had initially planned to hide away and maximize my time writing, and I thought that starting a Substack would be a distraction from that goal.

  4. The objective of After Babel is clearly delineated in the preface/prefaces, and the six chapters that comprise it are well organized. Throughout the book, George Steiner tries to reconcile the supposed chaos stemming from the Biblical fall of Babel Tower and the Darwinian benefit of having so many languages in the world. The first three ...

First published in 1975, After Babel constituted the first systematic investigation of the theory and processes of translation since the eighteenth century. In mapping out its own field, it quickly established itself as both controversial and seminal, and gave rise to a considerable, and still-growing, body of secondary literature.
